A brief history of the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team

Los Angeles Galaxy is an American soccer team that plays in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top flight of American soccer. The club was first founded in 1995, and has throughout the years had some fantastic success in the sport of soccer.

The club achieved its first taste of success in 1998 in winning the MLS Supporters Shield, a title that the team would later go on to achieve again in 2002. Los Angeles Galaxy has also twice won the U.S. Open Cup, twice won the MLS Cup, and the team even won the CONCACAF Champions League in the year 2000. Los Angeles Galaxy is a huge team in American soccer, and is, without doubt, one of the most well known American soccer teams all around the world.

Throughout the years, there have to date been seven different managers of the soccer club, with Bruce Arena currently the manager of Los Angeles Galaxy (having been with the club now since August 2008). Arena replaced Ruud Gullit, the man that managed the club from November 2007 to August 2008. Gullit had not been much of a success at Los Angeles Galaxy, and when he resigned the club was on a seven game winless run.

Cobi Jones holds several records with Los Angeles Galaxy right now; he’s the player to have made the most appearances for the club (306), the player to have scored the most goals (70), and also the player to have provided the most assists (86). Having retired from the professional game in 2007; Jones will not be adding to nay of his tallies, he is however the assistant manager of the club right now, and the club retired the number 13 shirt out of respect for Cobi Jones when he ended his playing career in 2007.

Los Angeles Galaxy plays its home games at the Home Depot Center, a sports stadium in Carson, California, and the club has been playing at the ground now since it opened its doors in 2003. Fellow MLS team Club Deportivo Chivas also plays its home games at the Home Depot Center, as well as the Los Angeles Riptide lacrosse team, the Adidas running club, and the Los Angeles Sol women’s soccer team is all set to play there also. Los Angeles Galaxy previously played at Rose Bowl between 1996 and 2002.

David Beckham is arguably the most successful soccer player ever to have played for Los Angeles Galaxy, and is the present captain of the club. Beckham has been with the club since 2007, having previously played for Real Madrid and Manchester United also. David Beckham is a very high profile player, and brought with him a supreme soccer celebrity status to Los Angeles Galaxy which has helped significantly lift the profile of the club all around the world.

Los Angeles Galaxy has quite a brief history as the club hasn’t been around for long. Unlike some of the major teams in Europe that have been around since the late 1800s/early 1900s; Los Angeles is a soccer team that only came into existence in the last fifteen years, and it therefore lacks the history that some of the biggest names in the sport have such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan. The club’s history is slowly being established though, and as knowledge of the MLS grows around the world; Los Angeles Galaxy is adding to its history, becoming a major name in the sport of soccer, and putting on some phenomenal displays of soccer skill in action also.

Los Angeles Galaxy is a soccer team that is all the time growing in stature, and as the quality of American soccer improves and the profile of the game heightens; I’m sure that Los Angeles Galaxy is a soccer club that will be adding to its trophy cabinet, and continuing to heighten its profile all around the world.
