Best restaurants in downtown Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a great city for food lovers. When I was there, I ate some incredible meals, including some of the best fish I ever ate. LA does seafood remarkably well, and I doubt you’ll be disappointed. LA also does a great line in vegetarian restaurants – even if you’re not a veggie, you won’t mind eating at one of them simply because the food is great.

Of course if seafood or vegetarian won’t fill the gap, and what you’re after is a big juicy steak, don’t worry. Despite the California vibe, you’ll still find some excellent steak houses and grills.

Let’s get started!

Water Grill

544 S Grand

Los Angeles, CA 90071

tel: (213) 891-0900

As soon as you walk in you’ll be struck by luxurious decor. Warm, comfortable booths, and an airy dining room make this a perfect place to bring a partner or business associate. On the other side is a 1920’s inspired raw bar, perfect for lunch on the go.

The fish itself is very fresh, and expertly prepared with a light touch. In each dish, the fish is the star of the show, which is exactly how it should be!

There’s an extensive wine list, if you feel like wining and dining, and the menu itself changes daily.

The downsides? Service can be mixed, and prices are steep. If you’re after culinary delights you’ll definitely get them, but you might be shocked at how little your dollar can buy.

Ciudad

445 S Figueroa St

Los Angeles, CA 90071

tel: (213) 486-5171

Latin food goes beyond the borders of Mexico in this trendy downtown restaurant. You can’t beat the price, especially if you go at Happy Hour – 3pm – 7pm. Plenty of fab drinks, and great appetizers. The interior is fairly hip and modern, with splashes of colour.

Again, the service can be mixed. Waiters are covering too many tables, so if you go during the evening when it’s busy you might find yourself waiting a bit impatiently. If you’re after cheap tasty latino food, however, this is definitely the place to go.

Yang Chow

819 N Broadway

Los Angeles, CA 90012-2309

tel: (213) 625-0811

Their slippery shrimp is famous, and for good reason. It’s absolutely perfect, with just the right touch of seasoning. Chinese food done well is the motto, and the fact the place is so busy during peak hours is testament to the great food. Reserve your table, or expect to wait.

Nick & Stef’s Steakhouse

330 S Hope St

Los Angeles, CA 90071

tel: (213) 680-0330

Fabulous steaks are dished up exactly how you like them in this
