Los Angeles galleries & museum guide

Los Angeles has more to offer than its famous Hollywood celebrities, active nightclubs, and warm beaches. The city holds some very nice art galleries and museums that are worth exploring. Here is a guide to the several art centers in Los Angeles:

J. Paul Getty Center

First, in L.A. there is the Getty Museum, which holds a very nice collection of art pieces from Rome, Greece and Italy. In addition to the beautiful artwork, the architecture of the museum itself is quite remarkable. The museum boasts six buildings, which are all quite stunning. Each building, or pavilion as they are referred to, holds a different collection of art. The landscaping surrounding the museum is also very impressive and it holds spectacular city views. Finally, the best part about the museum is that it is free for viewing by the public.

Getty Villa

Next in line we have the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades. This museum also has gorgeous architecture and also has an exquisite garden with fountains that surrounds the building. The museum boasts paintings and sculptures from different cultural times including ancient Greece, Rome and Etruria. You can take tours of the museum and learn about the history and culture behind the art. This museum also has free admission.

Huntington Library

The Huntington’s Library boasts many paintings, in particular by French and British artists. The Library also holds a very impressive collection of antique books and historical documents, including the Gutenberg Bible and the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer. The museum also holds many acres of botanical gardens, a beautiful Japanese Tea Garden, and a children’s garden.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is the largest museum west of Chicago and holds a very extensive collection of both modern and classical art. The collections of Latin American and Oriental art are particularly impressive. This museum holds several film and concert events so be sure to check the website before you come to find out what is happening at that time.

Norton Simon Museum

This small, quaint museum holds a nice collection of European and Asian art, holding several famous works of art by artists such as Rembrandt, Mondt, van Gogh, Picasso and Renoir. There are also many beautiful pieces of art by lesser known artists that are worth looking at as well. There is also a lovely sculpture garden.

Next time you head down to Los Angeles, make sure to visit one of the many art museums to add some culture to your vacation.
