Things to do in spring in Los Angeles

The same thing that you can do there any other time of the year. Los Angeles has everything: winter, spring, summer, and fall. But really, the best time to go to Los Angeles, weatherwise, is between May and October; the dry season.

The spring of 1981 was my second visit to Los Angeles: May to be exact. In fact, I spent that Mothers’ Day there. I was staying at the Holiday Inn in Hollywood (now the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel). The view from my room at night was just simply fantastic! Even on a warm and balmy spring night, Los Angeles was all lit up like a fairyland.

I went down to Santa Monica and the beach. Just imagaine: lying on the beach in Santa Monica in the spring. You can’t do that in other parts of the country until the Memorial Day weekend, except for also Florida and Hawaii.

I also took a tour of Universal Studios, went to see a taping of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson over at the NBC Studios in Burbank, went to Disneyland in Anaheim, went to this underground mall in downtown Los Angeles, took the tour of both Hollywood and the movie stars’ homes in Beverly Hills, and I even took a day trip to Palm Springs.

Up until a few years ago, if you went ever there in either March or April, you could have sat in the bleachers to watch the stars arrive for the Academy Awards. Now they hold them in February, and you never know; you might get rained on.

Palm Springs is a two-hour ride from Los Angeles. Once you’re an hour east of Los Angeles, it is desert country. For May, the temperature in Palm Springs was 98 degrees, but it wasn’t that humid. While I was there, we saw some of celebrities’ homes, and we even stopped at the Palm Springs mall. I even took a picture of the crossroads of Bob Hope Road and Frank Sinatra Drive.

The weather in Los Angeles that May was just fine; except the day before I left; which was cloudy. But thank God there was no rain. I believe the rainy season there is from November until April. But weatherwise, I would say anytime between May and October is the best time to go to Los Angeles. Maybe even late April.

It’s been 25 years since I was last to Los Angeles. If I ever decide to go there again, I would go there during the dry season.
