What to know about traveling in Australia

Oz is a massive country with as much geographic and cultural diversity as the United States. There are several cities with the commensurate touristy things to do, most located on the East coast. But just as NYC is different from Chicago or Los Angeles, so to are Australia’s cities.

You need to start by figuring out what type of trip you would like to take, then research Fodors, Frommers, Lonely Planet, Moon Guide, Let’s Go, or whatever other travel guide you like. There is so much information out there.

Important things to know:

- the seasons are opposite of the Northern hemisphere (Sidney’s climate is fairly close to Northern California)

- Aussies speak English, and can be a fairly wild & blustery bunch.

- Great transportation, clean cities

- it’s a huge country, so you’ll need to fly to most regions outside the Southeast (Sidney, Brisbane, Melbourne)

- It’s not cheap to travel in Oz, but it’s very backpacker friendly, so you can save a lot by going the youth hostel route.

- Plan to let your hair down and have fun. Aussies are a wild bunch, especially when you get out of the big cities!
